A magnitude-8 undersea earthquake has been registered off the coast of Papua New Guinea

A magnitude-8 undersea earthquake has been registered off the coast of Papua New Guinea, according to US Geological Survey.

    The quake occurred Saturday 60 kilometres east of Taron on New Ireland island at a depth of 73.4 kilometres. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said in a message following the quake, "Widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible".

    The PTWC said tsunami waves were possible in the next three hours along some coasts of not only Papua New Guinea but also Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Nauru, Kosrae and Vanuatu.
