A moderate earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred at 8.34 am today in the Kuril Islands of Japan.
The epicenter of the quake was 439km northeast of Asahikawa, Japan, and 5,154km northeast of Kudat, Sabah, according to media reports.
The quake did not pose any tsunami threat, the reports added.
