Miami - UPI
Tropical Storm Philippe, churning in the southern Atlantic Ocean, gained strength afternoon, U.S. forecasters said. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 5 p.m. EDT advisory Philippe was producing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, up from 50 mph at 11 a.m. Philippe was moving to the west-northwest at 9 mph, far enough out to sea that no watches or warnings were in effect for any Caribbean island, the hurricane center said. Its tropical storm force winds are extending outward up to 105 miles from its center. Philippe is expected to stay on its current track through the night, then turn westward Sunday and Monday while weakening somewhat, forecasters said.
