A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 struck Hokkaido and other parts of northern Japan on Thursday, but no tsunami warning was issued. 
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the quake originated off Uchiura Bay in the southwestern part of the northernmost main island at a depth of about 10 kilometers, according to Japan's (Kyodo) News Agency. 
It registered lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 1 to 7 in Hakodate, Hokkaido.
