Strong earthquake in Chile

A strong earthquake was registered off the coast of southern Chile late Friday, but the country's National Emergency Office said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, ABC News reported on its website.

The Chilean Navy's Hydrography and Oceanography Service said there were no signs of a possible tsunami in the temblor's wake.

The US Geological Service said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4. It was reported at about 10:06 p.m. EDT and had a depth of about 6 miles (10 kilometers). The epicenter was about 55 miles (88 kilometers) northwest of Concepcion, and about 267 miles (430 kilometers) southwest of the capital of Santiago.
