A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked central New Zealand Monday. The quake, which struck at 3:52 p.m. local time, was centered 5 km north of Castlepoint on the southeast of the North Island at a depth of 90 km, according to the government's GeoNet monitoring service.
