Cairo - Arab Today
An evening featuring string quartets will take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's Arts Centre on 31
The concert will open with Telemann's Concerto for 4 Violins in D Major followed by Vivaldi's Concerto for 4 Violins in B Minor.
The second half of the evening will feature the String Quartet No 12 in F major Op 96 by one of the most prolific chamber music composers of the 19th century, Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904).
Already in his 50s, Dvorak composed this quartet in less than a month, during his summer holidays in Spillville, Iowa (home to a Czech community) while serving as the director of the newly founded National Conservatory of Music in New York; hence the composition is dubbed “American.”
The composition is played frequently at concert halls. Egyptian audiences had an opportunity to listen to Dvorak's quartet last November, when performed by the Awtar Quartet at the Cairo Opera House's small hall.
In Alexandria, the quartets will be performed by members of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Chamber Orchestra and the BA Amateurs Orchestra.
