Take a bold risk. Doing something totally out of character will be scary but exhilarating. You have the chance to gain mastery in a beloved subject. Getting back into a learning situation, serving as an apprentice or working as an assistant will be humbling but instructive. You'll have to scale back social pursuits for the sake of practicing your craft and doing research. Try not to dwell too much on your disappointment. If you stay focused, you'll reach heights you never dreamed possible.
