Beware of pursuing a friendship with someone simply because they can help you. You dislike such opportunistic behaviour. It's one thing if you have a natural affinity for a person; it's another if you're only interested in their connections. Have you fallen out with an influential expert? Stop trying to get back in their good graces. Instead, focus on improving your own performance. The only way to land the position you want is through sheer talent. Befriending the right people can help, but only marginally.
