The Curriculum Division in the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has issued the World of Communications book to cover topics in Unit Two of the Integrated Social Studies curriculum for Grade 6 students. This comes in line with ADEC's efforts to diversify learning resources. The book includes important topics such as personal and public communication, the role of technology in communication and information, qualitative examples that demonstrate the role of science and technology in changing people's awareness to the social and natural world. It also looks for reasonable and ethical solutions to problems facing students when in conflict between scientific developments, standards and social values. The focus of this book is to develop various skills, especially those relevant to history and geography such as timeline, map reading and graph analysis. Students use references and data sources to obtain and address information. The book brings different subjects together such as Islamic Studies, Arabic and Maths. It also focuses on ethics, values and math skills, to include graphs and percentages, and language skills including reading, comprehension and different literary genres. Dr. Mugheer Al Khaili, ADEC's Director-General, said that communication skills are of the utmost importance to student's contemporary life because they are experiencing rapid growth and enormous means of communication. "The book is an important and vital source of knowledge that helps students enhance their skills and identify advantages and disadvantages of modern means of communication," he added. "This comes in line with ADEC's efforts to achieve the Abu Dhabi vision which aims to provide students with 21st century skills and capabilities," added Al Khaili. Dr. Karima Al-Mazroui, ADEC's Curriculum Division Manager, said that the book is a valuable source of knowledge and information which helps enhance a students social, communication, self-management and thinking skills. "In the New School Model, a student performs assigned tasks, is held accountable for the success of such tasks, listens to instructions, reads to obtain information, writes descriptive reports, displays work using technology, manages time effectively and considers different points of view," she added. Dr. Al-Mazroui explained that the philosophy of the book is based on modern learning and pedagogy approaches which focus on students, guided by teachers, and are closely related to his society and environment. "The book is informative as it covers local communication companies and even recognizes the U.A.E.'s efforts in the field of satellite technology, aiming to enhance national identity and loyalty," added Dr, Karima.
