Polling booths closed in Scotland's historic referendum on independence at 10:00 pm local time (21:00 GMT) Thursday, and the counting of ballots began with the result expected in the early hours of Friday.
Officials expect a turnout as high as 80 percent for a vote which could end a 307-year union with the rest of the United Kingdom.
