J.K. Simmons won the Oscar for best supporting actor on Sunday for his role in jazz drumming movie "Whiplash" -- the first award of the night at the 87th Academy Awards.
Simmons beat fellow nominees Robert Duvall ("The Judge"), Ethan Hawke ("Boyhood"), Edward Norton ("Birdman") and Mark Ruffalo ("Foxcatcher").
