Cairo - MENA
Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab held a meeting on Sunday to check on measures taken by the Irrigation Ministry to settle the problems facing Al Saf Canal in Giza governorate.
Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazi reviewed a report on the 52 kilometer-long canal that was set up to reclaim 40,000 feddans.
He said the canal was handed over to the ministry in 2011 to be the only side responsible for any maintenance works or constructions.
The report shed light on problems facing the canal, including low-quality water because of industrial drainage, outdated bridges and some construction defects.
He updated Mahlab on measures taken by the ministry in cooperation with Giza City Hall to address the canal problems, including banning the operation of quarries threatening the canal and setting up new drainage system.
