Over one-fourth Singaporeans shop online at least once a week, while more than half do it at least once a month, the highest in Southeast Asia, local media reported on Thursday, citing the Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes Study 2014.
The study, which was conducted in July with 500 respondents from Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, showed that 26 percent of Singaporeans shop online at least once a week, and 58 percent shop online at least once a month. When asked if they would do all their shopping online if it was practical, half of the surveyed said yes.
The average cost of the most expensive item that Singaporeans have purchased online was 2,887 Singapore dollars (2,310 U.S. dollars), Channel NewsAsia reported.
According to the survey, Singaporeans aged between 25 and 44 were those who shop most frequently, with 53 percent of respondents shopping online at least several times a month.
In addition, 30 percent of Singaporeans who shop online use their mobiles to make purchases at least once a week, the survey showed.
Convenience, cheaper prices and direct delivery are among the top reasons for Singaporeans to shop online, and travel is the most popular category as the survey shows that about 51 percent of the respondents booked their flights and 46 percent reserved their accommodation online. Other popular categories include concert, sporting tickets and games.
