The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) issued a report Friday putting Chicago business barometer at 58.7 in May, up from 49 in April, driven by measurements of employment and new orders. It shows that business activity in the U.S. Midwest has begun to climb in May after the decline in April. To be specific, the gauge of new orders rose to 58.1 in May from 53.2 in April; and that of employment climbed to 56.9 from 48. 7, the highest level since January this year. ISM is scheduled to release a similar report on the national sector in the next week.
