US stocks closed higher Tuesday ahead of outcomes of meetings from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan and as oil prices ticked higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI added 9.79 points, or 0.05%, to close at 18,129.96. The S&P 500 .SPX gained 0.64 point, or 0.03%, to finish at 2,139.76. 

The Nasdaq Composite .IXIC rose 6.33 points, or 0.12%, to close at 5,241.35.
