Imported car sales in Japan

 Japan's new imported car sales in May plunged 20.7 percent on yearly basis to 20,602 units, local media reported Thursday.
According to Japan Automobile Importers Association, sales of foreign-brand dropped to 17,919 units, down 13.4 percent from the previous year, while those of Japanese-brand vehicles which were made abroad plunged 49.1 percent to 2,683 units.
The top three foreign brands were Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, all from Germany. Volkswagen sold 4,342 units in the reporting period, down 1.5 percent on year, for a market share of 21.08 percent but still top one.
Sales of Mercedes-Benz declined 23.5 percent to 3,076 units, for a 14.93 percent share, followed by BMW with 2,482 units, down 29.0 percent, for a market share of 12.05 percent.
Among Japanese brands, Nissan's sales fell 62.1 percent to 1, 127 units, while Toyota's sales dropped 9.3 percent to 1,174 units.
