Caterpillar’s engine block incorporates extra iron in high-stress areas to deliver longer life. The reason that the state company building the United Arab Emirates’ railway network has picked U.S. train engine maker Electro-Motive Diesel to supply its first locomotives. Etihad Rail said Sunday that LaGrange, Illinois-based EMD will deliver seven diesel-electric freight locomotives by next year. EMD is a division of Caterpillar. Financial terms were not disclosed. The locomotives will be used on a 266 kilometer freight line Etihad Rail is building to transport sulfur from the west of the country to a port on the Persian Gulf. That project is the first phase of a planned 1,200 kilometer rail network across the Gulf federation.
