Two mortar shells fired from Syria landed on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights on Tuesday afternoon, Israeli officials said.

"A short while ago, forces identified two explosions in the northern Golan Heights," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson unit said in a statement. "Initial reports suggest two mortars shells hit Israeli territory," read the statement.

Israeli forces are searching the area, it added.

Israeli rescue services said that the mortars apparently hit an open field, causing no injuries.

A military official later told Israel's Channel 2 TV news that the mortars are believed to be a spillover from the four-year war in Syria between Assad's loyalists and militant groups.

Errant fire from the fighting in Syria has been occasionally spilling over to Israel, usually causing no damages or injuries.

However, two UN peacekeeping soldiers were injured in the Golan Heights by errant mortar shells in May.
