The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a London-based monitoring group which relies on a network of sources on the ground, reported that the death toll of series of car and suicide bombings that hit two government strongholds of Tartous and Jableh climbed to 145, the BBC reported.

SOHR added that 97 people were killed in Jableh and another 48 in Tartous.

It also said the two bombings at the bus station in Jableh were suicide attacks. 

A news agency linked to Daesh said the terrorist group was behind the attacks.

Government sources said that Jableh blasts hit residential neighborhoods just 6 kilometers from a Russian airbase, from where it has conducted air strikes on Daesh targets across Syria.

For his part, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said terrorist groups were resorting to bomb attacks against civilians because they were unable to fight the Syrian army.

"We will not be deterred. We will use everything we have to fight the terrorists," he added
