The play 1984, based on George Orwell’s novel by the same name, will be performed at Bibliotheca Alexandrina on 27 and 28 February.
Directed by Ahmed Samir, the play is staged in the framework of the Premier Project, an initiative that supports the work of young Alexandrian directors.
Orwell -- a celebrated English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic -- sets his story in the dystopian world of Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, within the superstate of Oceania. The superstate is controlled by a tyrannical regime, supposedly led by a figure known as Big Brother, around whom revolves a strong, widespread cult of personality.
The story follows Winston, a government employee who begins to question the legitimacy of this regime. 1984 is a reflection on the rise totalitarian regimes throughout the second world war, and the new order to which they could lead.
