Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has tendered his resignation, the secretary general of the Italian presidency, Ugo Zampetti, said.
President Sergio Mattarella will begin consultations with political party leaders on finding a new government on Thursday, starting, Zampetti said.
Renzi decided to quit after losing a referendum on constitutional reforms on Sunday, but heeded a request from Mattarella to wait until the parliamentary approval of next year's budget law, which came Wednesday, dpa reported.
