Indonesia has been re-appointed as a member of the governing body of the International Labor Union (ILO) for the 2017-2020 term, according to the Indonesian permanent representative in Geneva.
In a voting held at the 106th meeting of the International Labor Conference in Geneva on Monday (June 12), Indonesia was re-appointed as a deputy member of the ILOs governing body after it held the same position for the 2014-2017 term, the Indonesian permanent representative noted in a press statement released on Tuesday.
The re-election of Indonesia as a member of the ILOs governing body reflects the international communitys recognition of its active role and contribution to realizing achievements at the national, regional, and global levels, Indonesian Manpower Minister Hanif Dhajiri stated after the election of members of the ILOs governing body.
By being a member of the ILOs governing body, Indonesia can encourage ILO programs to meet the national interests, he remarked.
In addition, Indonesia can bridge the interests of other non-member countries of the ILOs governing body, he pointed out.
"The ILOs governing body plays a very strategic role, and thus, several countries compete with each other to become its members. As a member of the ILOs governing body, Indonesia has the opportunity to raise manpower issues that are of national interest to countries in the region," he added.
The ILOs governing body is an executive board tasked with deciding policies, budget, and programs.(*)
