Jakarta - Arab Today

Indonesia will actively participate and play a leadership role in the United Nations (UN), Indonesias new Permanent Representative to the UN Dian Triansyah Djani stated while presenting his credentials to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The Indonesian government was determined to promote the principle of multilateralism in dealing with global problems, particularly issues affecting its national interests, the ambassador was quoted as saying on Tuesday at the UN Headquarters in New York in a statement issued by the foreign ministry on Thursday.

Djani also reiterated Indonesias commitment to establishing cooperation with the UN and its roles in the UN peacekeeping mission.

The ambassador remarked that Indonesia was keen to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2019-2020 period and to help ensure the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.

Indonesia will always push for the freedom of Palestine and respect human rights internationally. It is also eager to establish cooperation to ensure development, including in the maritime field.

The UN secretary general praised Indonesias role in peacekeeping missions so far. Indonesia is the worlds tenth-largest contributing nation to the UN peacekeeping forces.

Ban Ki-moon also lauded Indonesias leadership in climate change, the Sustainable Development Agenda, and other issues.

Prior to his appointment, Djani was the director general for America and Europe in the Indonesian Ministry for Foreign Affairs since 2012.

Between 2009 and 2012, he served as permanent representative to the UN bodies in Geneva, including the World Trade Organization.

Djani was the director general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations from 2005 to 2008.

He also served as director of Intra-Regional Cooperation for Asia-Pacific and Africa from 2004 to 2005 and director for Multilateral Trade and Investment from 2002 to 2004.

His overseas postings included service in Indonesias Permanent Missions to the United Nations in Geneva, from 1997 to 2001, and in New York, from 1991 to 1994. Djani began his career in the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1985.

Born in 1962, Djani holds masters degrees in economics from the University of Indonesia and in economic development from the Vanderbilt University in the United States
