Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani has expressed hope that Partners in Population and Development (PPD) member states will be united to address global population issues, particularly a wave of migrants.
"The global population currently reaches 7.5 billion, and more than one billion of them are migrants. The migrants not only bring a huge population with them but also different cultures, behaviors, ideologies, diseases, and the like," she said, while inaugurating the 14th International Conference of Partners in Population and Development here, on Tuesday.
If the government of a country does not anticipate migrants, who come to the state along with their new identities, they may have the potential to cause problems and conflicts in the future.
She stated that no country can control and manage a wave of migrants from one area to another. After all, each country needs to meet the basic rights of the migrants.
"We must fulfill their rights to prevent problems in the future,? she remarked.
She noted that urbanization is the consequence of rapid development in a region or country.
"To date, nearly 54 percent of the global population live in urban areas. Urbanization has grown so rapidly that (the region or country) must intervene in it through a better policy," she revealed.
She expressed hope that the conference of PPD member states will come up with a common policy to carry out population-related development in the future.
"We must synergize and remain united to coordinate with any matter related to population growth in the future," Maharani pointed out
