German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande on Friday issued a joint statement in support of US airstrikes on a Syrian airbase in the wake of a chemical attack widely attributed to the government of Bashar al-Assad.
Al-Assad "carries the sole responsibility for this development," Merkel and Hollande said.
"His repeated use of chemical weapons and his crimes against his own population required sanctioning," said the statement carried by German News Agency (DPA).
