Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi has stressed the important role of the majority in protecting rights of the minorities, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.
Suu Kyi made the remarks when addressing a workshop responsible drafting rules that protect the rights of ethnic minorities in Nay Pyi Taw Tuesday.
Noting that ethnic majorities have a great responsibility to give protection to the languages, culture and customs of ethnic minorities, Suu Kyi urged them not to forget the need of minorities when they work for protecting the rights of minorities.
"In protecting the rights of ethnic nationals, you also need to be careful about responsibility. If anyone want rights, they are required to accept responsibility," she said.
"Rule of law is meant for defending the whole populace of the country under the protection of laws of great benefit for the citizens, absolutely not for suppressing the people. The law needs to be just, It will be beneficial for our country only if it is just and fair," she added.
The workshop to address the legal aspects of the draft rules is being attended by officials from the Office of the Attorney General, legal experts and scholars.
