Democrats and Republicans members of the US Congress offered both praise to President Trump’s Thursday missile strike on Syria.
"We salute the skills and professionalism of the U.S. Armed Forces who carried out tonight's strikes in Syria," Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said in a joint statement. "Acting on the orders of their commander-in-chief, they have sent an important message the United States will no longer stand idly by as Assad, aided and abetted by Putin's Russia, slaughters innocent Syrians with chemical weapons and barrel bombs." Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, despite having criticized Trump's policies in the past, endorsed his decision.
"Making sure Assad knows that when he commits such despicable atrocities he will pay a price is the right thing to do," Schumer said. "I salute the professionalism and skill of our Armed Forces who took action today." House Speaker Paul Ryan called the President's actions "appropriate and just." "These tactical strikes make clear that the Assad regime can no longer count on American inaction as it carries out atrocities against the Syrian people," he said.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said in a statement that the U.S. airstrikes would hopefully diminish the Assad regime and "his capacity to commit atrocities against innocent civilians." "President Trump has made it clear to Assad and those who empower him that the days of committing war crimes with impunity are over," Rubio said.
