Russia should take more resolute action to see the UN Charter observed, so that the United Nation retains its major role in the world, the chairman of the Russian upper house’s committee for international affairs, Konstantin Kosachev, wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday.
He said Russia could fight "passively, when it has to use its right of veto, and actively - through putting forward its own initiatives, that are not so numerous so far," the parliamentarian from the Federation Council wrote.
Kosachev accused the US of an attempt to create a system in which the country and its loyal allies would be outside the jurisdiction. He dubbed an attempt to force through a draft resolution on a tribunal on the Malaysia Airlines MH17 flight crash as ‘dancing on the bones’.
He said if international tribunals were created under UN Charter’s Chapter VII, the first cases they should look into were NATO air strikes on Belgrade in 1999, an operation of the US and its allies against Iraq in 2003 in bypassing the United Nations, and their disregard for UN decisions on Libya in 2011.
