The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Tuesday visited the Zaatari refugee camp, some 80km northeast of Amman, where he checked on the conditions and needs of Syrian refugees.
Guterres commended the major role Jordan plays in providing the refugees with different services to east their suffering, highlighting at the same time the Kingdom's humanitarian stance led by King Abdullah II.
Touring the camp, the UN official stressed the importance of continuing helping the Syrian refugees in Jordan through various international humanitarian organizations to provide all necessary needs to shoulder the great burden on the Kingdom, Jordanian news agency Petra reported.
He also visited the "UN Women Oasis" housed in the camp, which is a safe space that promotes economic empowerment programs for women and girls in Zaatari. He also met a number of the displaced Syrians, who expressed hope to solve the crisis in their country.
Director of the Syrian Refugees Camp Affairs Department, Brig. Gen. Jihad Mattar, briefed the Secretary-General on the services provided to refugees, utilities and burdens borne by Jordan due to hosting them in Jordan.
