Manchester United registered a 1-0 away victory at St Etienne to qualify for the last 16 round of the Europa League but goal scorer Henrikh Mkhitaryan left the match in the first half with an apparent hamstring injury.
United had defender Eric Bailly sent off in the second half for two bookable offences but they never seemed in danger as the home side faced the sizable challenge of overcoming a 3-0 loss in the first leg.
Jose Mourinho started star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Juan Mata in a strong attack but rested David de Gea and Antonio Valencia, and Anthony Martial, possibly with an eye on Sunday's EFL Cup final against Southampton, which could potentially hand the Portuguese gaffer his first piece of silverware as United manager.
Midfielder Michael Carrick was also substituted in the second half when he picked up a calf knock and was replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger.
