saying something and doing the opposite

Jihad el-Khazen

The first term of Barack Obama is coming to an end, having entered its final weeks. I can say that he has not carried out any of his promises to Arabs and Muslims, or carried through on his declared positions on the Palestinian issue; in fact, it has been a case of saying something and doing the opposite. In September 2010, at the General Assembly meeting of the United Nations, I heard him say, "When we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations – an independent, sovereign state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel." We returned to the General Assembly in September 2011, and the United States fought the request by the Palestinian Authority for Palestine's membership, which Obama had expected, and promised; the US used a veto in the Security Council to defeat the Palestinian request. The above involves information whose veracity cannot be contested. However, I will draw a conclusion that makes me support Obama's return to the White House. I believe he will work during his second term to carry out his promises, and what failed to be carried out. I am writing this column on Sunday, and am waiting to hear any stance that will be taken on the Palestinian issue this time. I believe that Obama was being honest when he extended his hand to Arabs and Muslims, and that the American mafia of evil and war prevented him from carrying out what he said in his famous address in Cairo at the beginning of 2009. Meanwhile, the Palestinians did not do anything to help him, with their ongoing disputes and divisions. The cabal of war and evil is made up of the Israel lobby, the neoconservatives (who are mostly American pro-Likud Jews), and the military-industrial complex, which Dwight Eisenhower once warned about. Most American Jews are liberal centrists, who elected Barack Obama and will vote for him again. Meanwhile, you have the extreme right, which is a minority and loyal to Israel, at the expense of American interests; these people accused Obama of treason and bit the hand that was feeding them. I ask Arab readers to realize that the majority of American Jews are not like this. In The Washington Post, Scott Wilson wrote an article in mid-August, containing the following information: -On 13 July 2009, around 12 American Jewish leaders, whose loyalty is to Israel, met with Obama; he told them about the need to stop settlements. -In May 2010, 37 party members in the Senate and House met with Obama, and declared their support for Israel; they opposed his focus on the settlements. -In June of this year, Obama met with a number of American Orthodox rabbis and other American Jews. Obama was determined to stop the building of settlements and his secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, talked about halting all of them, and not some of them, and illegal sites, along with their "natural growth." However, last September, Obama gave an address at the General Assembly and did not mention the occupation, or the settlements. Instead, he talked about "peace is hard work." This is everything he learned, after more than three years in the White House. It is difficult for any president to serve his country and interests if a part of the population is loyal to another country, one that is fascist, racist and occupies land, and if all of the legislators have sold themselves to such an invented country (there are many similarities between Obama and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, based on this notion). I apologize for repeating a point that I believe is very significant. A few weeks ago in this column, I mentioned that the American president promised the then-Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, to be more flexible in dealing with Russia during his second term. I did not need an open microphone to relay what was said in a whisper to confirm my opinion that Obama will be free of the pressure of the lobby and elections, during a second term. He will be able to carry out what he promised in his first term and was unable to implement. This is also my opinion of the Likudnik gang of war and evil, or Israel's fifth column. The leading figures of this gang are paying hundreds of millions of dollars to the campaign of Obama's rival, Mitt Romney. Their extremist media attacks Obama every day and spreads lies, rumors and fables about him. During its recent party conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Democrats were obliged to return the phrase "Jerusalem, the capital of Israel" to their platform after the Republicans turned it into a scandal. Barack Obama is very smart; he is a voracious reader, and used to be a university professor. He must know his adversary well, and must be waiting for an opportunity to respond. There remains the so-called "October surprise," which can turn an election upside-down, and I do not rule out the terrorist Benjamin Netanyahu dragging the US into a war with Iran, if he believed it would weaken Obama in the campaign. We will wait and see. --- The views expressed by the author do not necessarily represent or reflect the editorial policy of Arabstoday.
